The changing of the seasons means the changing of

The changing of the seasons means the changing of the speed limits…but this time, for good!

The Wisconsin DOT has permanently changed the speed limits along Hwy 42 (Water St) here in Ephraim. The speed limit is now 30mph through downtown and 40mph along the outskirts.

This means no more seasonal raising and lowering of the speed limits each season, instead a median speed limit year round.

Although we’re cruising a little faster, please still be sure to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

And a reminder, this decision came directly from the Wisconsin DOT, not from the Village of Ephraim.

Eras of Ephraim: Celebrating 75 years of the @ephraimhistorical.

Today, join us while Jeff tells the story of former Ephraim resident, Ole Nicolai Olson, who came to Ephraim in 1873 from Norway. In 1880, Nicolai, his wife, and daughter lived on the land south of the exposed Eagle Bluff and quarry.

Nicolai had become somewhat of a hermit by 1890, living independently of his wife and daughter. If you walk the Eagle Trail today, you can still see what remains of the cellar of his shack - what many in Ephraim called “The Haunted House”.

A skilled carpenter as he was, Nicolai constructed a fine pine coffin for himself which he kept in his attic. On one stormy day in early October of 1896, Nicolai left his home on the shore on his handmade raft with a load of logs heading for the mill at Sister Bay. Soon, he became lost - his body not being found until May of the following year by Louis Johnson of Detroit Harbor, resting on Fisherman’s Shoal off the coast of Washington Island and 40 miles from Ephraim. He was buried on Washington Island soon after, however due to the advanced decomposition of the body, he was identified after the burial by his clothing.

As Nicolai’s cabin sat abandoned following his death, Ephraim’s youngsters would dare each other to make their way to the attic where they would sit in the coffin. Reports claim they heard the clanking of chains, voices, and creaking in the house as they sat. It is said that it wasn’t until the death and burial of Nicolai’s daughter in her father’s coffin did his spirit rest.
